corporations & wealthy, increase tax breaks for low income seniors and the disabled! Stand with govt workers! So many ways to make your voice heard!

Welcome to Missouri Mondays.
March 7, 1965 Bloody Sunday
“60 years ago, a group of brave civil rights organizers marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama in the pursuit of justice and equality. Today we’re reminded of their courageous sacrifices, and tasked with the responsibility of doing what we can to carry forward their work.” President Barack Obama
“Few events in American history have had the ripple effects of the March 7, 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery, where civil rights marchers were violently ambushed by state troopers as they advocated for their constitutional right to vote.
The event, which would later be known as “Bloody Sunday,” was seen by millions. The vicious attacks against peaceful protesters, which included tear gas and beatings with billy clubs, sent shock waves across the world, leading to mass support for the marchers and the eventual passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This moment of nonviolent resistance stands as a testament to the power of peaceful civil disobedience in the face of unspeakable violence.”
“What they did here will reverberate through the ages. Not because the change they won was preordained; not because their victory was complete; but because they proved that nonviolent change is possible, that love and hope can conquer hate.” – President Barack Obama, Remarks 2015 at the 50th Anniv of the Selma to Montgomery Marches https://www.obama.org/stories/meet-the-photographer-president-obamas-50th-anniversary-visit-selma/
Let us honor the sacrifices and continue the work of John Lewis and all those who fought for our precious right to vote!
TAKE ACTION this week on MO Legislature bills:
Targeting the citizen initiative petition process
Endangering life-saving scientific breakthroughs by prohibiting the use of fetal tissue
Giving massive tax breaks to corporations and to the wealthy, decimating our state budget at the expense of programs and services that help all Missourians thrive. (See the Missouri Budget Project analysis of MO tax law that found the changes over the past 30 years have “resulted an inadequate, upside-down tax system where low- and middle-income Missourians pay a higher share of their income in taxes than the richest Missourians, and out-of-state corporations pay less than their fair share for public services. This structure shifts the costs to hard working families.” – https://mobudget.org/mo-taxes-revenue-comparison-2024/)
Increase the Circuit Breaker credit for low income senior citizens and disabled persons and expand income eligibility
Prohibit any Missouri law enforcement officer from confiscating guns from a “law abiding citizen” under the “Second Amendment Preservation Act” SB 23

NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION!
TELL YOUR U.S. CONGRESSMAN TO PROTECT YOUR VOTING RIGHTS AND VOTE NO ON THE SAVE ACT!
From ULTRAVIOLET ACTION
“Let’s be clear: Republicans want to make it as difficult as possible for U.S. citizens to vote, but we won’t let them! When more people turn out to vote, democracy wins.
Creating additional barriers to voting that will disproportionately affect women, LGBTQ+ individuals, people of color, disabled citizens, and working-class families is an attack on our democracy. Join us in urging House members to oppose the SAVE Act!
The so-called “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” (SAVE) Act has been reintroduced in the House and flagged as a top priority by House Republican leadership.
If passed, the SAVE Act would effectively ban people from registering to vote by mail or online by requiring that all U.S. citizens present a passport or birth certificate that matches their current legal name--not just to register to vote but even to make an address change or update their voter registration.
This means that countless eligible voters who don’t have a passport or birth certificate that matches their name or gender, voters who don’t have those documents at all, and voters who cannot stand in line at their state election office to register to vote or update their voter registration in person would face unnecessary obstacles to casting their ballots. If passed, this baseless voter suppression law would impact young people, disabled people, transgender people, people with low incomes, tribal voters, rural voters, survivors of climate disasters, and military families, not to mention the TENS of MILLIONS of married women who have changed their names.”
