Welcome to Missouri Mondays.
It is an outrage but no surprise that Gov. Mike Kehoe has called for a special session in compliance with Trump’s orders to rig Missouri’s Congressional map ahead of the 2026 elections by breaking up Democratic Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s 5th District to create another Republican seat.
“Splitting Kansas City’s Black population—a community with a rich shared heritage
and common interests—into multiple districts dilutes their voice and weakens their
representation,” said Rod Chapel, President of the Missouri State Conference of the
NAACP. “This proposal is about politicians choosing their voters, not voters choosing
their representatives. It’s an attempt to rig the 2026 elections before a single vote is
cast.”
“The Missouri legislature rejected a 7-1 supergerrymander after the most recent
census, and for good reason,” said Denise Lieberman, Director and General Counsel,
Missouri Voter Protection Coalition. “Redrawing Congressional district lines
mid-decade without any new census data violates our state constitution and takes
away voters’ power to elect candidates of their choice, causing real harm to our communities. If cities like Lee's Summit, Columbia and Kansas City are split into
multiple congressional districts, they will lose their representation. The promise of
‘one-person, one vote’ is that districts reflect voters’ communities. All Missourians
deserve for their voices to be heard. Missouri lawmakers should reject this effort to
rig the district lines and split up local communities.”
We knew this was coming. We knew Kehoe would follow orders out of fear. We already know this governor, Speaker Patterson, Senate Pro Tem O’Laughlin ripped voter approved earned paid sick leave from Missouri workers because of corporate donor pressure. We know they also feared threats from anti-abortion lobbyists so they passed another abortion ban measure to trick voters into overturning Amendment 3 next year.
Do they think we don’t notice they’re ignoring us, overturning our votes, trampling on our rights and our democracy out of fear to satisfy their donors, powerful special interest lobbyists, and a dictator in the White House?

Shamefully bowing to political pressure from Trump, Governor Kehoe has called for a special session to redraw Missouri’s U.S. House districts ahead of the 2026 elections. “Missouri has eight congressional districts, and Democrats hold two”. Kehoe’s new “power grab” map “would split Kansas City, which is currently entirely in the 5th District and represented by 11-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, into three districts where Republicans would have an electoral edge. The intended result is a map where the GOP holds 90% of the state’s seats in the U.S. House.” (Missouri Independent Aug 29) Voters should be choosing their politicians, not the other way around! Advocates for Immigrants Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) provides “Know Your Rights” training for community members who are directly impacted by immigration policies. No matter where you were born or what your immigration status is, you have rights under the constitution. During this training, we will review people's constitutional rights. AIRR’s goal is to educate, train and empower as many community members as possible to feel confident with their knowledge of their due process rights in order to exercise them to keep themselves and their families safe. This training also offers a plan of action when a person is detained. Additionally, AIRR offers Know Your Rights to allies and service providers on how to better protect the community they serve.
