“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, or a year, it is a struggle of a lifetime. That’s our struggle, no matter what Mr. Speaker you decide to do today. That’s our struggle. Standing on the shoulders of John Lewis. That’s our struggle. Never be afraid to make some noise and get into good trouble. Good trouble. Necessary trouble.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries invoked the words of civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis during his nearly 9 hour speech delaying the House vote on Trump’s big ugly budget bill until morning instead of hidden in the dark of night. "We gotta fight a lot of battles on behalf of the American people. It's not over," Jeffries said. "This is just one of them," he added, "but we wanted to make sure that the American people had an opportunity to fully and more completely understand, in the light of day, just how damaging this one big, ugly bill will be to the American people."
"Donald Trump’s deadline may be Independence Day. That ain’t my deadline," Jeffries said. "You know why, Mr. Speaker? We don’t work for Donald Trump, we work for the American people. That's why we're here right now on the floor of the House of Representatives, standing up for the American people." "Shame on this institution if this bill passes. That's not America, we're better than this. We are better, we are better," Jeffries said emphatically, surrounded by his Democratic colleagues.” Read more here: https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/07/03/congress/hakeem-jeffries-longest-house-speech-00438933 Politico 7/3/25

Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy of Good Trouble.
From voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act to the criminalization of protest, the Trump administration is launching a full-scale attack on our civil and human rights. But we know the truth: in America, the power lies with the people, and we’re rising to prove it. This is more than a protest; it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom.
Coined by civil rights leader Congressman John Lewis, "Good Trouble" is the act of coming together to take peaceful, non-violent action to challenge injustice and create meaningful change. Good Trouble is marches, protests, service work – any action where communities come together, take a stand against wrongdoings, and speak truth to power.
Please note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

NOW - “TELL U.S. SENATORS HAWLEY AND SCHMITT – “YOU BETRAYED MISSOURIANS! SHAME ON YOU FOR VOTING FOR TRUMP’S BIG UGLY BUDGET BILL!”
Despite Sen. Hawley’s public statements against Medicaid cuts, he voted for Trump’s big ugly budget bill as did Sen. Schmitt. The Senate version passed the House and Trump has signed it into law. It is almost 1,000 pages, gives tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, adds $trillions to the national deficit, massively increases funding for ICE by $billions making it the largest federal law enforcement agency, includes devastating cuts to programs for low-income families gutting Medicaid health coverage and SNAP food assistance benefits. Trump’s Republican Tax Scam will kick more than 250,000 Missourians off their health care and gut SNAP for more than 246,000 Missouri households. It also diverts billions in taxes to private schools robbing our public schools of funding. Nearly 148,000 Missouri kids could lose access to free school meals. Trump’s cruel budget will harm Missourians and all Americans. We deserve better. Let’s let our Senators know how we feel about their betrayal.
