04/29/24 Missouri Mondays - #EndTheBan signature gathering wraps up! Stay tuned for announcement! Tell your MO Senator to vote NO on SJR 74 changes to initiative petitions!

Tell Gov. Parson to veto HB 2634 prohibiting funding for Planned Parenthood!

Welcome to Missouri Mondays!

The signature gathering wrapped up yesterday for Missourians for Constitutional Freedom’s historic effort to put restoring abortion and reproductive rights on the ballot.  It was an enormous undertaking and we send our sincere thanks to everyone who volunteered! We anticipate an announcement regarding the results and signature qualification in the coming days!  Stay tuned!

Missouri lawmakers are nearing the end of session on Friday, May 17 and remain focused on sabotaging the initiative petition process. SJR 74 is back in the Senate and would end majority rule and so-called “ballot candy” language meant to confuse and trick voters was restored by the House. See MO legislature calls to action below including urging your senator to vote NO on SJR 74, and urging Governor Parson to veto a bill sitting on his desk that prohibits Medicaid reimbursements to Planned Parenthood. MO LEGISLATURE CALLS TO ACTION!

TELL YOUR STATE SENATOR TO AGAIN REJECT SJR 74 CHANGES TO THE INITIATIVE PETITION PROCESS ENDING MAJORITY RULE AND CONFUSING VOTERS WITH “BALLOT CANDY”

From League of Women Voters of Missouri Call to Action April 28

Last week the House passed SJR 74 and sent it back to the Senate with “ballot candy” amendments restored.

  • Legislation meant to sabotage the citizens initiative petition process in multiple ways

  • Changes the formula for passage, ending one person = one vote majority rule

  • Bill would give preference or more weight to a vote based on zip code; each vote should count equally regardless of where you live.

  • A two-condition threshold requirement creates a rule by minority, undermining the will of all Missourians.

  • Adds back so-called “ballot candy” unrelated provisions intended to deceive voters into supporting legislation they would otherwise likely oppose such as specifying that non-citizens can’t vote and that foreign governments can’t sponsor or finance initiatives, provisions already in existing law.  Non-citizens CANNOT currently vote in Missouri; restating existing language is confusing; it’s unnecessary and a disingenuous message

CALL TO ACTION!

Tell your state senator to vote NO on SJR 74 to protect majority rule and direct democracy through the citizens initiative process!  Also be sure to thank senators if they have fought against IP changes and ask them to continue to stand strong against SJR 74!

TELL GOVERNOR PARSON TO VETO HCS HB 2634 PROHIBITING PUBLIC FUNDING INCLUDING MEDICAID REIMBURSEMENT FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD SERVICES

From League of Women Voters Call to Action April 28

  • Has passed the MO House and Senate and is on the governor's desk waiting to be signed into law.

  • Under this act, no public funds shall be expended to any abortion facility, or affiliate or associate thereof, including for MO HealthNet reimbursement.

  • Planned Parenthood does not provide abortions in MO but provides necessary healthcare such as mammograms, cancer screenings, contraception, and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment.

  • Missouri medical providers should not be denied government funding for providing legally permissible services in the state.

  • Missouri should support the rights of women and those who can become pregnant to self-determination related to, and including, but not limited to, bodily autonomy, privacy, reproductive health, and lifestyle choice.

  • Experts agree the “health-care-safety-net system” (places that do not accept Medicaid patients) cannot absorb all Planned Parenthood patients.

CALL TO ACTION:  TELL GOVERNOR PARSON TO VETO THIS BILL!

Call Parson’s office:  (573) 751-3222
