MONDAY MARCH 2 - JEFFERSON CITY & STATEWIDE

🚨NO ON SENATE BILL SB 986 REQUIRING PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP TO REGISTER TO VOTE!

Public Hearing on Senate Bill SB 986

🗓️ Monday, March 2nd at 2PM

Senate Lounge, 3rd Floor

Missouri State Capitol

Jefferson City, MO

❌Would Require Proof of Citizenship to Register to Vote (ex: passport, birth certificate, naturalization papers, certain military or tribal docs)

❌More than 21 million Americans lack ready access to documentary proof of citizenship

❌More than 200,000 Missouri voters lack a valid state ID

❌Those whose names have changed since birth, or those who have errors on underlying documents, would need to provide additional legal identity documents.

❌This places the burden on citizens to prove their citizenship to an election official.

📣Tell the MO Senate Local Government, Elections & Pensions Committee  to vote NO on SB 986!

📣Testify in person OR

📩 Email these Senators BEFORE 2PM MARCH 2 - See Sample Testimony below

Sample Testimony/Email from Missouri Voter Protection Coalition

Subject - Vote NO on SB 986!

Dear Senators:

I urge you to vote no on Senate Bill SB 986, which would require documentary proof of citizenship in order to register to vote. SB 986 is a solution in search of a problem. Voting by non-citizens is extremely rare. Nearly 10 percent of voters lack access to documentary proof of citizenship like a certified birth certificate. Nearly half of Americans lack a passport, disproportionately affecting low wage workers, rural voters, and those without a college degree. Missouri voters have a passport at lower rates than voters in most other states. Married women, and others whose names have changed since birth will face added barriers to providing these documents. Housing-insecure voters will face barriers, as will those displaced by natural disasters, such as last year’s tornado that ravaged thousands of households in St. Louis.  Missouri already has stringent requirements in place to ensure that only eligible voters make it onto the rolls, and severely penalizes voting by anyone ineligible to do so. Missouri laws should encourage voter participation not put unnecessary obstacles in the way.  Please consider your constituents who would face barriers to participation, and vote NO on SB 986.

MON MARCH 2 - JACKSON COUNTY / KC METRO

JACKSON COUNTY LEGISLATURE MEETING

Public Hearing on Proposed Ordinances

#6050 - Law Enforcement Face Coverings & Badges

#6061 - Permit & Zoning for Non-County or Municipal Detention Centers

Monday, March 2

3PM

Jackson County Courthouse

K.C. Legislative Assembly Area

415 E.12th Street, 2nd floor

Kansas City, Missouri 64106

The Jackson County Legislature will hold a public hearing regarding Ordinance

#6050, prohibiting law enforcement officers from concealing their faces or

badges during performance of their official duties and establishing penalties

and exemptions and Ordinance #6061, prohibiting all permit and zoning

approvals for non-County or municipal government owned detention facilities.

✔️Attend in person

✔️Submit comments for the entire legislature here: legislatorsandaides@jacksongov.org

✔️Contact your county legislators BEFORE 3PM to vote YES! Find your legislator here: https://www.jacksongov.org/Government/County-Legislature/Who-Are-My-County-Legislators

Sample email:

Subject:  Vote YES on Ordinance #6050 & #6061

As a Jackson County resident and xx District constituent, I’m writing to strongly urge YES votes on Ordinance #6050, prohibiting law enforcement officers from concealing their faces or badges during performance of their official duties and establishing penalties and exemptions and Ordinance #6061, prohibiting all permit and zoning approvals for non-County or municipal government owned detention facilities. We need both of these ordinances in place. Law enforcement officers should not be able to conceal their identity.  I’m certain I would be terrified if I were approached by an unidentified armed masked person and we should take immediate steps to prevent the kind of terror we have seen on the streets in Minneapolis and even closer to home with ICE and Customs and Border Patrol personnel in Grandview and Olathe. In addition, we should do everything possible to prevent ICE prisons from operating within Jackson County.  Hopefully passing Ordinance #6061 will do just that.  Please vote YES on Ordinance #6050 & #6061.

NOW - NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION!

🚨TELL SEN. HAWLEY & SEN. SCHMITT - VOTE NO ON THE NEW S.A.V.E. ACT!

☎️ Phone: (833-346-1779)

The new S.A.V.E. Act already passed the U.S. House and is now in the Senate. This law could keep millions from voting!  If passed, the new S.A.V.E. Act would:

❌Require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship - either a passport or an original copy of their birth certificate - when registering to vote, and any time they update their voter registration. More than 21 Million American citizens don't have access to those documents.

❌ Especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, survivors of natural disasters, communities of color, and married women who have changed their last names.
