02/16/26 Missouri Mondays - The power of people is greater than the people in power! Stand together! Take action!

Welcome to Missouri Mondays!
We begin a huge sigh of relief over the news that local firm Platform Ventures is not moving forward with a deal to sell their south KC warehouse to ICE for a mass prison with cages for up to 10,000.
Daniel Tucker with Stand Up KC and Missouri Workers Center wrote:
“Why did this happen? Because low-wage workers and allies like you across the community stood up and took action to say we want ICE Out of Kansas City! Because individuals, organizations, and institutions across KC came together and spoke with one voice to say IMMIGRANTS ARE WELCOME HERE and ICE is NOT!” “Today we celebrate this victory. Tomorrow we KEEP UP THE FIGHT for a world where ALL people are free and are treated with economic and social dignity!”
Thank you Daniel, Stand Up KC / Missouri Workers Center and allies! We are deeply grateful for everyone who took part in any way and made it clear—NO ICE PRISON IN KC ON OUR WATCH!
Power to the People! Here’s a few ideas for taking action this week!
**Our electeds work for US! Let your voice be heard! Find details below for taking action with the League of Women Voters MO on one or more bills moving through the Missouri Legislature.
A sampling of bills this week includes:
– Automatic record clearing (expungement) for ”clean slate” eligible offenses
– Forcing work requirements for receiving Medicare benefits
– Relaxing MOLeg term limits
– Ending motor vehicle air quality emissions inspection program.
**Together we make a difference! Our challenges are great but so is our power when we all pitch in! Thanks for being here each week and finding AT LEAST ONE way to get involved. NOW - NATIONAL CALL TO ACTION!
TELL SENATORS HAWLEY AND SCHMITT TO VOTE NO ON THE NEW S.A.V.E. ACT!
Phone: (833-346-1779)
Last week the House passed the new S.A.V.E. Act and now it is in the Senate. This law could keep millions from voting!
If passed, the new S.A.V.E. Act would:
Require Americans to provide documentary proof of citizenship - either a passport or an original copy of their birth certificate - when registering to vote, and anytime they update their voter registration. More than 21 Million American citizens don't have access to those documents.
Especially burden military voters, tribal voters, rural voters, survivors of natural disasters, communities of color, and married women who have changed their last names.
“New SAVE Act Bills Would Still Block Millions of Americans From Voting - The “show your papers” requirement is an attack on the freedom to vote.”

Advocates for Immigrants Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) provides “Know Your Rights” training for community members who are directly impacted by immigration policies. No matter where you were born or what your immigration status is, you have rights under the constitution. During this training, we will review people's constitutional rights. AIRR’s goal is to educate, train and empower as many community members as possible to feel confident with their knowledge of their due process rights in order to exercise them to keep themselves and their families safe. This training also offers a plan of action when a person is detained. Additionally, AIRR offers Know Your Rights to allies and service providers on how to better protect the community they serve.
