Last week hundreds of Missouri Voter Protection Coalition voting rights allies showed up in Jefferson City with a loud and clear message to lawmakers to protect the citizen’s initiative process. We need to keep up the pressure against IP attacks and other MOLeg bills that will harm public education such as open enrollment. See the calls to action below!

We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines with so much at stake! Each week we’ll provide resources, upcoming events and ways to get involved that we hope you will find meaningful. Thank you for staying informed, taking action, and helping to spread the word by sharing this link to sign up for Missouri Mondays weekly email bit.ly/3pF99Uw.

TELL YOUR STATE SENATOR TO REJECT PUBLIC SCHOOL OPEN ENROLLMENT BILLS!

Last week the MO House passed House Bill HB 1989 public school open enrollment bill and it is now in the Senate.  Senate Bill SB 1051 open enrollment bill would allow students to transfer to charter schools as well as to other school districts. SB 1051 will be heard in a Senate committee this week.

Under open enrollment –

  • Missouri public school students can attend any public school without regard to where a student lives as long as the school is willing to accept them.

  • State funding follows the student so there is reason for concern that open enrollment will create a vicious cycle where struggling school districts will struggle more.

  • Some districts may be forced to cut programs and services or possibly close the school district due to loss of funding

Statement from the Missouri School Board Association opposing public school open enrollment bills:

"Our organizations are opposed to these bills and have concerns about the impact open enrollment will have on students who remain in districts that see a loss of students and state funding. Districts that see a loss of students would likely need to cut programs, services, and teachers as a result. Our member organizations are also concerned about the impact the bills would have on school district collaboration given that districts will be forced to compete for students.

While participation in the program is voluntary, a district that chooses to participate will be empowered to accept students from other districts. As students leave, either for academic or convenience reasons (i.e. a parent works in a neighboring district) there is fear that these students will be spread across grade levels, thus sending districts will not have the option of cutting staff. Instead, those districts will be forced to cut programming/services for the remaining students, with the possibility of being forced to close the school district entirely if too many resources are cut because of open enrollment.”

Tell your senator to vote NO on HB 1989, SB 1051, and any public school open enrollment bill!

SUPPORT THE WORK OF MISSOURIANS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL FREEDOM!

Missourians for Constitutional Freedom is a statewide coalition of organizations and concerned citizens from across the state working to establish the right for all Missourians to make decisions about our own reproductive health care – including abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care – without interference from out-of-touch politicians.

The decision of whether or not to have an abortion is a personal choice that should be made by Missourians, their families, and their health care providers – not politicians in Jefferson City. Passing this amendment will end our state’s abortion ban and make sure Missourians and their families can once again make the decisions that are best for them. Decisions around pregnancy, including abortion, birth control, and miscarriage care are personal and private and should be left up to patients and their families. But here in Missouri, politicians are making that decision for us.

We are coming together to end Missouri’s cruel total ban on abortion and give the power to make personal health care decisions back to where it belongs – to the people.

We are required to collect 172,000 valid signatures by May 5th, 2024, to ensure Missourians get to vote on ending our cruel abortion ban at the ballot. Your SUPPORT IS CRUCIAL to make this initiative a reality.

  • Volunteer: Every action matters. Sign up to collect signatures, make calls, or host a house party. Sign up at https://moconstitutionalfreedom.org/ to receive updates from the campaign and get notified for opportunities to sign the petition near you!
