09/12/22 Missouri Mondays - Remember 9/11 and resolve to stand up every day for democracy
PLUS-- 57 days to make a difference before Nov 8! / News, events, and actions this week!

Welcome to another Missouri Mondays. As our nation paused to honor 9/11 victims on the 21st anniversary of the attack, President Biden called on us to not only remember but to unite and renew our resolve to stand up for our country and our democracy. Biden said, “I hope we’ll remember that amidst those dark days, we dug deep, we cared for each other, and we came together”. "It's not enough to stand up for democracy once a year or every now and then. It's something we have to do every single day.”
Our democracy and our freedoms are under attack. The freedom to vote, the freedom to make our own reproductive and health decisions, the freedom to love who we choose to love, the freedom to worship and send our kids to school without fear of a gunman armed with an AR-15 — are all on the line and we have 57 days until the November 8 election to make a difference. Take action and help spread the word!
NATIONAL NEWS
“Biden honors 9/11 victims at Pentagon ceremony: 'This is a day not only to remember, but a day of renewal and resolve'”
“President Biden commemorated the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks at a remembrance event Sunday at the Pentagon, delivering heartfelt remarks that honored those killed there.”
"It's not enough to stand up for democracy once a year or every now and then. It's something we have to do every single day," the President said. "So this is a day not only to remember, but a day of renewal and resolve for each and every American and our devotion to this country."
“Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, herself a former first lady who was a New York senator at the time of the 9/11 attacks, said Sunday that the day was "indelibly part of my memories."
"I feel grateful that we were able to come together as a country at that really terrible time. We put aside differences. I wish we could find ways of doing that again," Clinton told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union."
"We have also, I think have been reminded about how important it is to try to deal with extremism of any kind, especially when it uses violence to try to achieve political and ideological goals," she added. "I'm one who thinks that there are lessons still to be learned from what happened to us on 9/11 that we should be very aware of, during this time in our country and the world's history."

“Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
“She died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate, where she had spent much of the summer. The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world.”

“Antigua and Barbuda may try to remove King Charles III as its head of state”
“Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda, announced he plans to hold a referendum within the next three years to decide whether to remove the king as head of state and become a republic. "This is a matter that has to be taken to a referendum for the people to decide," Browne told ITV News. "It does not represent any form of disrespect to the monarch. This is not an act of hostility, or any difference between Antigua and Barbuda and the monarchy," he added. "It is a final step to complete the circle of independence to become a truly sovereign nation."
In addition to the United Kingdom, there are 14 countries known as Commonwealth realms that still have the ruling British royal as their monarch. But in recent years, there have been efforts among some Caribbean nations to do away with the British monarch as their figurehead. They've come at a time when Caribbean political leaders and activists have increasingly called on Britain to apologize for its history of slavery throughout the region and pay reparations.
At least six Caribbean countries – including Antigua and Barbuda as well as Jamaica and Belize – have suggested they want to remove the British king or queen as their head of state, according to Foreign Policy. In November, Barbados did just that. The island nation eliminated the queen as head of state and replaced her with a president.”
“For many people, Queen Elizabeth was the face of a historically oppressive empire.”

“Court order would close Agape Boarding School after years of abuse allegations”
“A Cedar County judge Wednesday ordered Agape Boarding School to be shut down after years of allegations of sexual and physical abuse of students — though the order remains on pause until after a hearing Monday morning.
The judge’s order came in response to a request from the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the Department of Social Services for the school to be closed. The state’s injunction to shutter the Christian reform school in Stockton marks a long-awaited development for many advocates and former students who have called for its closure, though it does not yet spell victory for them.
“Hopefully, Agape gets shut down,” said Robert Bucklin, a former Agape student who is suing the school. “It’s been a long time coming.”
The state Department of Social Services found by a preponderance of evidence that an Agape staff member physically abused a child, according to the state’s petition. The Agape staff member had an appeal deadline of Tuesday to contest the findings but did not do so, according to the petition, and was placed on the state’s child abuse and neglect central registry as a result.
Missouri law prohibits those listed on the registry, or those with substantiated findings of child abuse, to work at a residential care facility.
“Rep. Keri Ingle, a Lee’s Summit Democrat who helped craft the 2021 state law that gave the attorney general’s office and Department of Social Services greater oversight of unlicensed residential facilities, said she hopes to see Agape closed even if the employee is found to have been terminated.
“This is systemic. This is widespread. There’s a culture of abuse that happens at this facility,” Ingle said, “and that the Department of Social Services and the Attorney General’s Office has determined that they cannot ensure the safety of the kids there, due to this substantial evidence of abuse that is ingrained in this facility’s culture.”

“MO Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft clarifies position in high-profile U.S. Supreme Court election case”
“Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft wants to be clear that his amicus brief in a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court case is not an endorsement of the so-called “independent state legislature” doctrine. He’s not denouncing it, either. Instead, Ashcroft is floating a theory of his own: That Congressional redistricting is a duty reserved solely for the states under the 10th Amendment, with no role whatsoever for Congress.
Ashcroft says many, including The Independent, initially misinterpreted his position when he filed the amicus brief. His brief dovetails with the issues at the heart of the Supreme Court case — whether state legislatures alone have authority over redistricting. But Ashcroft says his take is more nuanced.
The state legislature controls redistricting in Missouri, Ashcroft said, but that doesn’t mean it has to in every state. “It’s reserved to the states, and the states themselves, in their constitution,” he said, “and laws should define it. So it could be different in Missouri than Kansas than Oklahoma than Nebraska.”
Ashcroft’s theory has its detractors. Rick Hasen, an election law expert from UCLA, called Ashcroft’s amicus brief “bonkers” and “convoluted.”

“CDC endorses updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters for this fall”
“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on the approval from the agency’s independent vaccine advisers that recommended an updated coronavirus vaccine booster this fall. The CDC recommended boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech for those who are 12 years old and older and from Moderna for those who are 18 and older. These are known as “bivalent” vaccines because they are formulated to protect against the original coronavirus strain as well as the Omicron variant, which is highly contagious. “Updated COVID-19 boosters add Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 spike protein components to the current vaccine composition, helping to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination by targeting variants that are more transmissible and immune-evading,” the CDC said in its announcement.”
