January 6 Committee hearing scheduled for Wed Sept 28 at 12:00 pm CT

“Ahead of what could be their final investigative hearing, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, members of the House Jan. 6 committee on Sunday offered a small preview of what is to come as they rapidly approach the end of their timeline.

“We're not disclosing yet what the focus will be. I can say that, as this may be the last hearing of this nature -- that is, one that is focused on sort of the factual record -- I think it'll be potentially more sweeping than some of the other hearings," Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said on CNN’s "State of the Union."

"But it too will be in very thematic," he said of the hearing. "It will tell the story about a key element of Donald Trump's plot to overturn the election. And the public will certainly learn things it hasn't seen before, but it will also understand information it already has in a different context by seeing how it relates to other elements of this plot."

MISSOURI IN THE NEWS

“Missouri Rep. Crystal Quade files bill to appeal the state's 'extreme' abortion law”

“Missouri Rep. Crystal Quade, a Democrat from Springfield, has filed a bill in response to Missouri's anti-abortion trigger laws, which took effect this summer.

The bill seeks to demolish what Quade sees as "extreme" legislature, according to the press release. After the Dobbs decision, abortions in Missouri were outlawed, regardless of length of the pregnancy and even in cases of rape or incest. House Bill 126 was enacted in 2019.

Quade explained her bill — House Bill 11 — was a necessity in her release while criticizing tax cuts proposed by Gov. Mike Parson. "Preventing the state from imposing forced pregnancies on unwilling Missourians is a top priority; pushing through a fiscally irresponsible tax cut for the wealthy when nearly every area of state government is underfunded is not," the statement reads.”

MO Legislature Special Session Tax Cuts - “Missouri Senate passes individual income tax cuts, bill heads to House”

Last week the MO Senate passed a tax cut that “would set the top tax rate for 2023 at 4.95% and, over time, reduce it to 4.5%. According to bill sponsor Sen. Lincoln Hough from Springfield, when fully implemented, the tax cut will reduce annual state revenue by about $950 million.

“Groups including the Missouri NAACP and the Missouri Budget Project, which analyzes how state economic policy impacts low-income residents, criticized the tax cuts as primarily benefitting the wealthy while spending money that could be used for health care, education and higher pay for state workers.”

“It benefits the wealthy while leaving behind the working class and most vulnerable populations,” Missouri NAACP President Rod Chapel said in a statement. “Our women and children, blue collar workers, government employees, Black citizens and other minorities are once again ignored in this quest to aid the wealthy.”

Democratic House Minority Leader Crystal Quade warned that the income tax cut will have "devastating long-term consequences for Missouri government.” Republican Sen. Lincoln Hough, who sponsored the Senate bill, said the tax cuts in total will cost about $950 million in lost state revenue once fully implemented.”

U.S. Senate Candidate AG Eric Schmitt sued to block St. Louis abortion access fund and his lawsuit was sent back to state court

“Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt’s lawsuit against St. Louis’ use of federal funds to support abortion access will be sent back to the state courts to decide — a move both Schmitt and national abortion-rights groups had hoped for.”

“In July, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones signed into law Board Bill 61, which established the Reproductive Equity Fund. Funded with federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars, the fund will allocate $1 million to organizations providing logistical support, like to cover costs of travel or childcare, for those accessing abortions out-of-state.”

“Applications for the fund opened last month, and an additional $500,000 will be issued to organizations bolstering access to reproductive health care, like doulas and lactation support. Another $250,000 was allocated to cover administrative costs.”

“In a statement Tuesday, Mallory Schwarz, executive director of Pro-Choice Missouri, which helped craft the recently-enacted St. Louis law, said the organization “believes that logistical support for abortion is legal under current statute.”

“In the post-Roe world, all Missourians seeking abortions are forced to flee their home state to access essential healthcare across state lines,” Schwarz said, “and we are grateful for the support and partnership of local leaders in working collaboratively to ensure Missourian’s access to abortion care.”

MO AG Eric Schmitt signs on to brief backing Trump in legal battle against DOJ concerning classified documents

“Missouri is among a number of Republican-led states pledging their support to former President Donald Trump in his legal battle against the federal government surrounding confidential documents stored in his home.

A brief filed Tuesday by 11 states in a federal appeals court backed Trump's effort to appoint a "special master" to oversee the case. It also opposed the Department of Justice's attempt to use documents identified as classified as part of its criminal probe.”

The group of states writes that "the administration's conduct in connection with this case is of a piece with the gamesmanship and other questionable conduct that have become the hallmarks of its litigating, policymaking and public relations efforts."

Among the interested persons listed in the brief are Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who is also running for U.S. Senate as the Republican nominee, and the state of Missouri.”

NATIONAL HISPANIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

“CDC endorses updated COVID-19 vaccine boosters for this fall”

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention signed off on the approval from the agency’s independent vaccine advisers that recommended an updated coronavirus vaccine booster this fall. The CDC recommended boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech for those who are 12 years old and older and from Moderna for those who are 18 and older. These are known as “bivalent” vaccines because they are formulated to protect against the original coronavirus strain as well as the Omicron variant, which is highly contagious. “Updated COVID-19 boosters add Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 spike protein components to the current vaccine composition, helping to restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination by targeting variants that are more transmissible and immune-evading,” the CDC said in its announcement.”

“CDC guidance states that those who have been infected with COVID-19, can get a booster following recovery from symptoms, but can defer a vaccine booster up to three months following infection.

If someone has received an original two-shot vaccine from either Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, they can wait five months before getting their first booster shot.”
