6/27/22 - Missouri Mondays - Roe v Wade overturned! Abortion now illegal in Missouri–no exceptions!

Roe v. Wade overturned! Abortion now illegal in Missouri–no exceptions for rape or incest! We won’t go back! Turn anger into ACTION NOW!

“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent.”

These are the final words in the dissent written by Justice Steven Breyer for Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan in the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the constitutional right to abortion after 50 years of established law and protection under Roe v. Wade.

More from the dissent: “Withdrawing a woman’s right to choose whether to continue a pregnancy does not mean that no choice is being made. It means that a majority of today’s Court has wrenched this choice from women and given it to the States. To allow a State to exert control over one of “the most intimate and personal choices” a woman may make is not only to affect the course of her life, monumental as those effects might be. It is to alter her “views of [herself]” and her understanding of her “place in society” as some- one with the recognized dignity and authority to make these choices. Women have relied on Roe and Casey in this way for 50 years. Many have never known anything else. When Roe and Casey disappear, the loss of power, control, and dignity will be immense.”

“The new status of abortion access on a state-by-state basis, says that from the very moment of fertilization, a woman has no rights to speak of. A State can force her to bring a pregnancy to term, even at the steepest personal and familial costs.” Breyer later added, “Whatever the exact scope of the coming laws, one result of today’s decision is certain: the curtailment of women’s rights, and of their status as free and equal citizens.

“Joining the Alito majority opinion were Justice Clarence Thomas, appointed by the first President Bush, and the three Trump appointees — Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. Chief Justice John Roberts, appointed by President George W. Bush, concurred in the judgment only, and would have limited the decision to upholding the Mississippi law at issue in the case, which banned abortions after 15 weeks. Calling the decision "a serious jolt to the legal system," he said that both the majority and dissent displayed "a relentless freedom from doubt on the legal issue that I cannot share." NPR June 24

ABORTION IS NOW ILLEGAL IN MISSOURI WITH NO EXCEPTIONS FOR RAPE OR INCEST

Under Missouri’s trigger law, abortions will only be permitted in cases of a medical emergency. There are no exceptions for rape or incest”

“Mere minutes after the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision was released, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt issued an opinion to kick off Missouri’s trigger ban — making Missouri one of the first states to outlaw nearly all abortions. Gov. Mike Parson soon followed with a proclamation declaring the law as in effect.”

Biden Signs Bipartisan Safer Communities Act Into Law!

“President Biden on Saturday signed into law the first major gun safety legislation passed by Congress in nearly 30 years. The signing comes just over a month after the mass shooting at a Texas elementary school killed 19 children and two adults. That attack came 10 days after a racist mass shooting at a Buffalo, N.Y., supermarket killed 10 Black people. "While this bill doesn't do everything I want, it does include actions I've long called for that are going to save lives," Biden said just before signing the measure. "Today, we say more than enough. We say more than enough," he added. "At a time when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential." The legislation, which passed the House 234-193 Friday night following Senate approval Thursday, includes incentives for states to pass so-called red flag laws that allow groups to petition courts to remove weapons from people deemed a threat to themselves or others.”

JANUARY 6 COMMITTEE HEARINGS

Recap of Last Week’s Hearings

Jan 6 Hearings Day 4 June 21

“The fourth hearing held by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol focused on the elaborate efforts by President DJT and his allies to hijack one of the foundations of democracy: the process behind the peaceful transfer of power. The committee laid out evidence showing how DT led a campaign that played out in two related ways: applying direct pressure on Republican officials in swing states to reverse his loss, and pursuing a plan to name “alternate” slates of electors intended to tilt the Electoral College result in DT’s favor. The hearing demonstrated the human costs of the waves of threats and intimidation set off by DT and his supporters as they pressured state officials and election workers to find a way to deprive Joseph R. Biden Jr. of his victory.”

“Shaye Moss, an elections worker in Fulton County, Ga., who, along with her mother, had been falsely accused by Mr. Giuliani of committing election fraud, provided a dramatic portrait of the harassment that Mr. Giuliani’s false claims had spawned. She described the racist messages she received on Facebook. “A lot of threats, wishing death upon me, telling me that, you know, I’ll be in jail with my mother and saying things like, ‘Be glad it’s 2020 and not 1920,’” Ms. Moss said. She said that the entire episode, and the attention that came with it, had “turned my life upside down.” “I don’t want anyone knowing my name,” she said. “I don’t want to go anywhere with my mom because she might yell my name out over the grocery aisle or something. I don’t go to the grocery store at all. I haven’t been anywhere at all. I’ve gained about 60 pounds. I just don’t do nothing anymore. I don’t want to go anywhere.” She said she loved her job as an election worker but ultimately quit.”

Jan 6 Hearings Day 5 June 23

“The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol painted a vivid picture on Thursday of how former President DT directed a wide-ranging bid to strong-arm the Justice Department into overturning the 2020 election, the most brazen attempt by a sitting president since Watergate to manipulate the nation’s law enforcement apparatus to keep himself in power.”
