MISSOURI IN THE NEWS

Last week the Governor’s special session wrapped up with Missouri lawmakers passing additional tax cuts primarily benefitting the wealthy, despite Democrat’s calls to use the current $5 billion budget surplus to address areas of great need and warnings about the future impact on our budget.

House Minority Leader Crystal Quade said this, “Just days ago, the Missouri Independent reported how staff at the state agency charged with protecting children are so underpaid and overworked that more than half quit last year. The story also quoted one supervisor who has resorted to selling his plasma to pay the bills. Similar stories of struggling employees leaving underfunded state agencies in droves for better pay elsewhere are common throughout Missouri government. The state’s temporary revenue surplus masks years of budgetary neglect that’s resulted in a state government that’s barely functional in some respects and outright failing in others. This irresponsible legislation will have devastating long-term consequences for Missouri government.”

“As debate opened Thursday, Democrats had prepared several amendments. They wanted to give a tax credit to teachers, property tax relief to senior citizens and make a tax credit for lower-income families refundable, meaning they would get a check if the credit exceeded their tax liability.”

“Groups including the Missouri NAACP and the Missouri Budget Project, which analyzes how state economic policy impacts low-income residents, criticized the tax cuts as primarily benefitting the wealthy while spending money that could be used for health care, education and higher pay for state workers.” “It benefits the wealthy while leaving behind the working class and most vulnerable populations,” Missouri NAACP President Rod Chapel said in a statement. “Our women and children, blue collar workers, government employees, Black citizens and other minorities are once again ignored in this quest to aid the wealthy.”

NATIONAL NEWS

“Death toll soars to 76 in Florida after Hurricane Ian demolished entire communities”

“Newly homeless Floridians are struggling to restart their lives while rescuers scramble to find any remaining signs of life among the wreckage of Hurricane Ian. In some cases, emergency workers are juggling both unimaginable tasks. “Some of the guys on Pine Island, they lost everything, but they’re doing what they can,” said emergency physician Dr. Ben Abo, who was preparing to join first responders on a rescue mission Sunday near decimated Sanibel Island and Pine Island. “It brings tears to my eye to see how hard they’re working.”

“Hours ahead of shutdown deadline, U.S. House sends Biden stopgap spending bill”

“U.S. House members, mostly along party lines, cleared a spending package Friday that would bolster funding for natural disaster response, though with Hurricane Ian still battering the Southeast, lawmakers will likely need to approve another aid bill later this year. The measure would provide $2.5 billion in assistance for the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire that destroyed parts of New Mexico this spring, $2 billion in Community Development Block Grant disaster relief funding for states affected by natural disasters during 2021 and 2022 and $1 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The package would keep the federal government up and running through Dec. 16, giving congressional leaders and the White House more time to work out how much to spend on discretionary programs and to draft bipartisan versions of the dozen annual government funding bills. The bill, approved 230-201, now heads to President Joe Biden for his signature. He needs to sign the measure before midnight, when the current government spending law expires ahead of the start of the new fiscal year Oct. 1.”

NATIONAL HISPANIC AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.
