MISSOURI COVID UPDATE - Week 7/26-8/1
As of Sunday, August 1, Missouri “ranked sixth nationally in the number of new cases per capita in the past seven days, according to data tracked by The New York Times. On Friday, the seven-day rolling average of daily deaths in Missouri was five per day, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. In the week prior, the state recorded nearly 13,000 new coronavirus cases.” KC Star “Statewide, hospitalizations for COVID-19 have more than doubled since the start of June, and the number of ICU patients has more than tripled.” AP Independent News
It should be no surprise to our Missouri Mondays readers that the incompetency and failure of our Republican “anti-mask mandate” Governor Mike Parson to take action in 2020 to protect Missourians from COVID-19, opening up the state too soon, and poorly managed, inequitable vaccine rollout has predictably led us to this place -- 695,726 total confirmed COVID cases and 10,310 deaths in Missouri as of Sun August 1 NY Times Emily Barone chronicles the rapid spread in Missouri of the Delta variant in her reporting in Time - “How the Delta Variant Overtook Missouri: A Lesson for the Rest of the U.S.” Time July 29 2021 Meanwhile our GOP Attorney General and candidate for U.S. Senate Eric Schmitt can’t file frivolous lawsuits fast enough. His latest is over Kansas City’s new mask mandate - Fox4KC You can let AG Schmitt know how you feel about wasting our tax dollars by phone at 573-751-3321 or using the online form at https://ago.mo.gov/about-us/contact-us.

THERE IS GOOD NEWS IN MISSOURI! SENATE BILL 53 AND 60 PROVIDES FREE FEMININE HYGIENE PRODUCTS TO INMATES IN MISSOURI JAILS AND PRISONS!
Again this week we want to take an opportunity to highlight and share good news out of Jefferson City and thank state legislators who work so hard for us in Missouri. Congratulations to State Representative Tracy McCreery, Democrat - District 88, for providing language in HB 53/60 that will now provide free feminine hygiene products to inmates in all Missouri jails and prisons. Previously, only some facilities provided these items, and they were often very low quality. Women were forced to pay if they needed more appropriate products. Rep. McCreery worked across the aisle with Rep. Bruce DeGroot to assure that inmates be given access to free and appropriate feminine hygiene products in all Missouri incarceration facilities.
Our thanks to Rep.Tracy McCreery and all of our hard-working Democrat state legislators!

JOIN THE DECLARATION FOR DEMOCRACY COALITION WEEK OF ACTION AUGUST 2-6 - THE SENATE MUST PASS THE FOR THE PEOPLE ACT!

#RECESS CAN WAIT
https://www.recesscanwait.org/
The freedom to vote is under attack by extremist lawmakers across the country. It is time for Congress to step in to protect our right to vote and our democracy. The For the People Act must be passed and signed into law before the end of summer in order to go into effect before the 2022 midterms to prevent the drawing of hyper-partisan maps that threaten to disenfranchise voters, especially voters of color, for the next decade. The For the People Act would also make voting safer and more accessible, combat government corruption, get big money out of politics, and allow everyday people to run for office – not just millionaires and billionaires. The Senate cannot leave for congressional recess without passing the For the People Act, even if that means delaying recess. #RecessCanWait – our democracy can’t.
