“Lawsuit alleges Missouri Senate map hurt minority voters, splits too many counties”
“A lawsuit challenging the state Senate redistricting map being used for Tuesday’s primaries alleges it violates the Missouri Constitution because it “packs” Black residents into two St. Louis area districts and splits Buchanan County without good cause. Filed by attorney Chuck Hatfield on behalf of three plaintiffs, the lawsuit names the Judicial Redistricting Commission and Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft as defendants. The commission created the map and Ashcroft implemented it for this year’s elections.” “The lawsuit asks for changes to five Senate districts and an order to Ashcroft not to use the map “for any purpose.” The state Senate has 34 districts, with half of the members elected every two years. This year, even-numbered districts are on the ballot and the lawsuit challenges the map for two and seeks modifications for a third on this year’s ballot. Hatfield said the intent of the lawsuit is not to force changes before Tuesday or get the proposed alternative put in place for November. Instead, he said he wants the case to force changes in time for the 2024 elections.”

“Clean energy package would be biggest legislative climate investment in US history”
“Sen. Joe Manchin's stunning reversal on a clean energy package has suddenly put Democrats in a position to pass the largest climate investment in US history, and by far the biggest legislative win for the environmental movement since the Clean Air Act. Wednesday night's surprise resurrection of a deal on $369 billion worth of climate and energy text between Manchin and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was a turn of events for critical climate measures that have died several times in the past year. Throughout it all, the package has hung on Manchin's vote, and the West Virginia Democrat had a strong hand in the climate and energy provisions. His influence is felt in some provisions that promote coal, oil and natural gas -- in a package that is ostensibly poised to incentivize renewable energy like solar and wind. But despite the concessions on planet-warming fossil fuels, analysis from Schumer's office suggests the measures would reduce US carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030, putting President Joe Biden well on his way to achieving his goal of cutting emissions in half by 2030.”

U.S. Senate bill for veterans exposed to burn pits stalled by Republicans. Both Missouri GOP Senators Blunt and Hawley vote no
“Veterans and their advocates gathered outside the U.S. Capitol on Thursday for what was supposed to be a celebration, one day after a crucial Senate vote on bipartisan legislation that would expand health care and benefits to 3.5 million veterans exposed to burn pits during their deployments. The gathering instead became a forum for those who have been working on the bill for years to vent their frustrations with Republicans for blocking it Wednesday afternoon over objections raised by retiring Pennsylvania GOP Sen. Pat Toomey. “The Senate is where accountability goes to die,” said Jon Stewart, celebrity comedian and longtime advocate for veterans. “These people don’t care.” Stewart said he was used to the lies, hypocrisy and the cowardice from members of Congress, but that he wasn’t used to the cruelty, calling Toomey “a f****** coward.”

Republican Senator Joni Ernst blocks bill guaranteeing right to birth control
“U.S. Senate Democrats tried to pass legislation Wednesday that would guarantee women can continue using contraception if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the long-standing precedent, the way it did with abortion. But Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst blocked their efforts by objecting to Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Ed Markey’s request for unanimous consent to pass the bill, saying the measure went too far. Under Senate procedures, no roll call vote was taken.”

DOJ investigating DT’s actions in Jan. 6 criminal probe
“The Justice Department is investigating President DT’s actions as part of its criminal probe of efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, according to four people familiar with the matter. Prosecutors who are questioning witnesses before a grand jury — including two top aides to Vice President Mike Pence — have asked in recent days about conversations with DT, his lawyers, and others in his inner circle who sought to substitute Trump allies for certified electors from some states Joe Biden won, according to two people familiar with the matter. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The prosecutors have asked hours of detailed questions about meetings DT led in December 2020 and January 2021; his pressure campaign on Pence to overturn the election; and what instructions DT gave his lawyers and advisers about fake electors and sending electors back to the states, the people said. Some of the questions focused directly on the extent of DT’s involvement in the fake-elector effort led by his outside lawyers, including John Eastman and Rudy Giuliani, these people said.”

AG Merrick Garland calls DOJ Jan. 6 probe the ‘most wide-ranging investigation in its history’
“The Justice Department plans to prosecute anyone who was “criminally responsible for interfering with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said Tuesday, speaking more expansively than he has previously about a federal criminal investigation that appears to have moved far beyond the rioters who attacked the Capitol.”
