05/03/21 - Missouri Mondays - Make good trouble to protect healthcare, food benefits, voting rights!

Last week the GOP majority Missouri Senate joined the House in refusing to fully fund the constitutionally mandated Medicaid expansion that voters approved to provide healthcare coverage to nearly 300,000 Missourians. Unless something unexpected happens before the legislature’s May 7 budget deadline, time and taxpayer dollars will be wasted in a court battle that the state will lose, or as the KC Star Editorial Board suggests Governor Parson could take action enrolling those who are now eligible and call a special session to approve the funding. Parson already included the funding for Medicaid expansion in his budget saying, “I have to represent all Missourians and they voted for it.” KCStar Editorial Board May 2

TAKE THESE NECESSARY ACTIONS THIS WEEK!

TELL GOVERNOR PARSON TO ENROLL THOSE NOW ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICAID EXPANSION AND CALL A SPECIAL SESSION FOR FUNDING IF THE LEGISLATURE DOESN’T ACT BEFORE MAY 7!

TELL YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE TO VOTE NO ON THE FOLLOWING BILLS:

FOOD ASSISTANCE WORK REQUIREMENTS--Taking food from families is cruel and unnecessary. HCS HB 217 requires any individual receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) funds to comply with work requirements or lose food assistance for 3 months, 6 months, or permanently. This bill would punish entire families. If one family member does not receive assistance, the family, including the children will suffer. Tell your Representaive to VOTE NO ON HCS HB 217.

VOTER SUPPRESSION--We must STOP voter suppression in Missouri!! Tell your Senator to vote NO on attempts to make it harder to vote in Missouri!. HB 842 would eliminate electronic voting machines and require paper ballots. There has been no evidence of voter fraud or compromised voting machines. This bill would create further delays in the voting process and tabulation and incur unnecessary costs. Tell your Representative to VOTE NO ON HB 842.

The voting rights of America’s Voters of Color and Youth Voters are under attack nationally by state legislators introducing and passing laws to suppress their participation in elections. Meanwhile, big business and billionaires are able to spend unlimited amounts of funding to buy our elections.

Join us as we mobilize on May 8 in the name of John Lewis as part of 100 events across the nation to pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1), the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4), D.C. Statehood and address the filibuster to do so.

Together, we can build a better nation and a stronger democracy.

In Kansas City, we'll kick things off with a Press Conference and rally at 1pm at the Bruce R Watkins Cultural Center, followed by a votercade. JOIN US!
